With the IFMAR 1:10 ISTC Touring Car and 1:12th Scale World Championships originally scheduled to begin in just a couple of weeks, the build-up to the event has taken an unexpected turn amid wider global concerns and debate within the RC community.
Early Concerns Raised
On 5th March, IFMAR released a statement asking drivers planning to attend the World Championships in China to confirm their travel plans, particularly if their route would involve flying through areas affected by the ongoing unrest in the Middle East. The organisation launched a poll to gauge competitors’ intentions, though the results of this survey have not been made public.
Later the same day, IFMAR issued a follow-up message clarifying that while they were aware of the geopolitical concerns being discussed, they were not currently planning to cancel or postpone the event. However, they indicated that postponement could be considered if formal documentation requesting such a move was received.
Drivers Speak Out
On 6th March, several leading drivers and well-known figures in the RC racing world publicly urged caution.
Japanese legend Atsushi Hara commented that postponement might be the best option given the safety concerns, while touring car star Michal Orlowski strongly encouraged IFMAR to delay the championships due to the uncertainty surrounding global travel.
Multiple-time world champion Marc Rheinard also added his voice in support of postponement. Their statements echoed concerns shared by many drivers in the international racing community.
For some competitors, the issue was not only safety but also the financial implications. Without official travel advisories advising against trips to China, many racers faced the possibility of losing significant expenses already committed to flights, accommodation, and race preparation.
FEMCA Requests Postponement
On 7th March, the regional governing body FEMCA (Far East Model Car Association), which oversees IFMAR events in Asia, announced that after reviewing the situation they had formally requested that IFMAR postpone the championships. According to FEMCA, safety concerns for competitors and teams outweighed the financial impact of delaying the event.

Waiting for a Decision
The following day, 8th March, passed without any further official communication.
Then on 9th March, IFMAR released a detailed statement responding to the situation. The document addressed the concerns raised and the request from FEMCA, but it also suggested that the issue may involve more than just safety considerations.
At the same time, ESIC also weighed in, referencing both safety concerns and technical issues with the race facility, including suggestions that the track surface may need resurfacing ahead of the event.
What Happens Next?
With differing views emerging from drivers, governing bodies, and organisers, the future of the championships remains uncertain. What is clear is that the global RC racing community is eager for clarity and, ultimately, a safe return to racing.
For now, competitors and fans alike will be waiting to see what decision IFMAR makes regarding one of the sport’s most prestigious events.
